Spring has officially arrived! Although it doesn’t really feel, or look like, it is in Alberta! However, as we anticipate warmer temperatures, no snow, and sunny days, it’s important to consider how to make your workplace safe throughout the season.
In today’s blog, we want to highlight some key safety tips for your workplace or worksite.
Spring Safety Checklist:
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): When it comes to workplace safety, PPE is used as a vital defense against serious injury. However, to keep workers safe, it must be used correctly and consistently. No matter your industry, PPE mistakes can compromise protection, productivity, and compliance. It’s important to use the right type of PPE, ensure the fit is correct, to wear when appropriate, that it’s stored properly, that proper training takes place, and to clean and replace equipment when needed.
- Lifting techniques: Lifting objects, especially heavy ones, can cause significant strain on your back. When doing any kind of lifting, be sure to stand close to the item, bend your knees and tighten your core. Use your leg muscles to support your body when you begin to stand up and try not to twist your spine. Take regular breaks and, if possible, automate some of these repetitive lifting tasks. Avoid lifting anything that is too heavy. If needed, use appropriate equipment, or ask for assistance.
- Electrical Safety: From minor injuries to more serious ones, not following proper procedures when working with electricity can be extremely harmful. It’s important to understand the importance of electrical safety, and what you can do to help stay clear of accidents and harm.
- Slips, trips and falls: Immediate cleanup of spills is essential! Keep walkways clear of clutter and ensure mats, rugs, and carpets lie flat. Wear the right footwear for the task at hand and adjust walking surfaces as needed. Remember to slow down and stay aware of your surroundings. Ensure there’s adequate lighting and that items you’re carrying or pushing don’t obstruct your view.
- Ladder safety: Inspect every rung of the ladder to verify that none are bent, broken, loose, or missing. Examine the side rails to ensure they are not bent or damaged. Check the ladder’s feet for any signs of being missing or damaged. Additionally, it’s important to look for anything that could prevent the feet from resting securely on the surface, such as dust, rocks, or debris from the worksite. Make sure the locking mechanism is functioning correctly and is securely locked before use. If you’re using a step ladder, inspect the platform for any hazards that could lead to a fall.
- Indoor air quality: Indoor air quality plays a major role in workplace health and safety. By understanding the sources of pollution and taking proactive steps, organizations can create a safer, more comfortable environment for everyone. Encourage workers to report odours, leaks, or anything out of the norm, keep personal work areas clean, avoid blocking air vents, and follow chemical-handling guidelines.
Safety is a year-round priority. By staying alert to procedures and policies and reminding employees as seasons shift, you can keep safety at the forefront, ensuring everyone remains safe and comfortable in the workplace.
