November has arrived, and fall is in full swing. While the season brings lovely colours, and plenty of sunshine, it also brings with it a downside, cold and flu season. However, by taking proactive steps, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones from pesky and unwanted germs. Today, let’s chat about some ways to help stay healthy through fall and winter.
Get the flu vaccine
Alberta Health Services states that “Influenza, commonly known as “the flu”, is a highly contagious infection of the airways caused by influenza viruses. It is often referred to as “seasonal” influenza because these viruses circulate annually in the winter season.” One effective way to prevent the flu is by getting your annual vaccination, which is recommended for those over six months old. It is important to get vaccinated now, before flu season is in full force.
Wash your hands regularly
Keeping your hands clean and free of germs is one of the best ways to help prevent germs from spreading. Using soap and water to wash your hands is key especially after being out in public spaces, before eating, and after using the washroom. In times when you don’t have access to soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. It is also important to avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth.
Get enough sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep plays a significant role in your overall health and well-being. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, which includes limiting screen time and establish a comfortable sleep environment to help improve your sleep quality.
Exercise regularly
Regular physical activity is beneficial for both physical and mental health. Exercise can help boost your immune system, reduce stress, and improve your mood. Even short walks or stretching can be effective in keeping your body active.
Getting outside and soaking up the sunshine, even as the weather gets colder, can have significant benefits. Additionally, as the days get shorter, people often experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). So, be sure to soak up the rays throughout the fall and winter months.
Manage your stress
Chronic stress can weaken your immune system, making you more prone to getting sick. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises. Finding enjoyable activities, or spending time with loved ones can also help alleviate stress.
Stay home when sick
If you start experiencing flu or cold symptoms, it’s essential to listen to your body and rest. Staying home helps you recover faster and prevents spreading illness to others.
It’s also a good idea to limit close contact with individuals who are sick. If you’re in crowded places, try to maintain some distance from others. If someone in your household is ill, practice good hygiene, don’t share food, drinks, or personal items, and ensure everyone gets plenty of rest.
Keep it clean
Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs, light switches, and mobile devices and computers. This helps reduce the spread of germs at home and at the workplace.
Incorporating these strategies into your daily routine during cold and flu season helps reduce the risk of illness for you, and those around you. Remember to stay safe, and healthy this fall and winter!
