Tips for Getting Along in the Workplace

DF SafetyManagement and Leadership

No matter your industry, role, or business, you have likely encountered some type of conflict during your professional career. While it can foster constructive dialogue in some instances, it’s key to recognize that unresolved disputes can escalate and lead to significant problems. Therefore, it’s crucial to implement effective strategies to ensure issues are dealt with and resolved.

In today’s blog, let’s discuss best practices for navigating workplace conflicts.

What Causes Conflict?

There are several reasons why conflict occurs in the workplace. Some common ones may include:

  • Poor communication
  • Different personalities
  • Unclear job roles and expectations
  • Differing values, beliefs, perspectives
  • Changes in the workplace such as leadership, employees, or policies and procedures

It’s important to recognize what is causing conflict so that you can implement the appropriate techniques to help manage these situations, and work toward finding a resolution.

When faced with conflict in the workplace, consider the following:

Address in a timely manner

When addressing conflict, the most important thing to remember is to deal with the issue early. The longer an issue goes unresolved, the more likely it is to escalate further. In many cases, people think that ignoring conflict will eventually make it go away. However, this is not the case. Conflict requires swift and effective action.

It is also important to choose the right time and place to deal with the situation. Be sure to find a neutral and private setting, where all parties involved will feel comfortable. Allow space for everyone to voice their thoughts and feelings and ensure everyone feels seen and heard.

Be an active listener

When dealing with conflict resolution, ensure you are practicing active listening. This means giving full attention to the person speaking. Demonstrate empathy and truly seek to understand their perspective. Be sure to repeat back what has been said, ask questions for clarity and acknowledge that their feelings are valid, and that you are willing to work

Be collaborative

In seeking out a solution, including all individuals involved in the conflict can be helpful in finding a resolution. Encourage open communication and ask for all parties to offer their ideas for a desirable outcome. You can explore different solutions to find a path that is accepted by all. Ensure that everyone is treated with respect, and communication remains inclusive, non-threatening and positive.

If you would like to explore this topic further, DF Safety offers an online course, Conflict Resolution: Getting Along In The Workplacewhich launched earlier this year.

It is designed to address the common issues that arise in the workplace, and covers the following:

  • Defining Conflict
  • Types of Conflict
  • Stages of Conflict
  • Strategies for Dealing with Conflict
  • Preventing Conflict Through Communication

Once completed, the goal is for participants to feel more confident managing conflict and utilizing avenues that support collaboration, productivity, and strong working relationships.

Conflict resolution takes education, time, effort, and patience. By keeping an open mind, a willingness to listen, and commitment to finding a beneficial solution, you are likely to resolve issues promptly, positively, and efficiently.
