As we head into the final week of November, and chillier temperatures start to appear on our thermostats, many households and workplaces are more likely to turn to space heaters for quick, convenient warmth. While these appliances can be helpful, they are also dangerous! When used improperly, they can lead to a fire, putting you and your home at risk. So, today, we want to offer a few simple ways to use your space heater safely, providing warmth and comfort throughout the winter.
Keep some distance
Space heaters need adequate space between other objects. To stay safe, keep at least three feet of space between the heater and the following materials:
- Furniture
- Curtains
- Bedding
- Paper products
- Holiday décor (especially Christmas trees!)
This helps serve as a buffer, and will prevent items from overheating, burning, or catching fire.
Plug it in properly
Space heaters use a significant amount of electricity. Therefore, to reduce the risk of overheating always:
- Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet
- Avoid using extension cords and power bars
- Ensure the plug fits securely and inspect regularly for any damage to the cord
If the outlet or plug becomes warm, stop using it immediately and consider having the outlet inspected to be safe.
Choose the right location
Where you place your space heater matters. It’s important to place the heater on a flat, level, and non-flammable surface. Avoid areas where it might get bumped, tripped or stepped on like:
- High traffic areas
- Under desks
- On top of furniture, boxes or rugs/carpets
- Never use a space heater in a workshop or garage, or where flammable paints, gas cans, or matches are present.
Remember to position the heater where air can circulate freely around it.

Don’t leave it unattended
A space heater should never be used without supervision.
Always turn the unit off when:
- You aren’t in the room
- Going to sleep
- Leaving the home or workplace
Using your heater unattended for long periods of time significantly increases the risk of fire.
Don’t use an old unit
Age matters when it comes to these types of appliances. Therefore, if your heater is older, it’s time to consider upgrading to a newer model. When doing so, ensure you look for:
- Tip over protection
- Overheat shutoff
- Cool, tough housing
These features help reduce risks and hazards, while adding important layers of protection.
Keep it clean
Dust, hair, and other debris can accumulate on and inside space heaters. This can reduce efficiency and increase the risk of fire. You should regularly:
- Clean the exterior
- Vacuum air vents
- Inspect for sign of wear or damage before each use
Space heaters can be a convenient way to stay warm during the long winter months. However, it’s essential that they are used responsibly. By giving adequate space, plugging it in properly, turning it off when unattended, and ensuring it’s well maintained, you can enjoy the additional heat, without worrying about potential danger.
