Concussion safety and prevention in the workplace are crucial to maintaining employee well-being and ensuring a safe work environment, especially in industries where head injuries are more common. Today, let’s discuss more about concussions, and tips for safety and prevention.

What is a concussion?

According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) a concussion is the most common form of traumatic brain injury and is caused by “a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move back and forth rapidly.” They can also be caused from whiplash, rapid rotation or shaking of the head.

In relation to worksites, concussions are typically the result of a fall, slip, trip or vehicle collision.

Signs and symptoms might include the following:

  • loss of consciousness
  • headache
  • nausea or vomiting
  • dizziness
  • blurred or double vision
  • slurred speech
  • balance problems
  • sensitivity to light and/or noise
  • difficulty concentrating/remembering
  • confusion, drowsiness, incoherent thought process

For some, concussions can lead to long term effects or resolve within a few weeks.

Concussion Safety and Prevention

Below are some key practices and strategies to help ensure the safety of all workers:

Conduct workplace risk assessments

It’s key to conduct regular assessments of the workplace to identify areas where head injuries are most likely, such as areas with falling objects, machinery, or slip-and-fall hazards.

Additionally, regularly inspect and evaluate equipment, tools, and environments to reduce the risk of accidents that could cause concussions or other injuries.

Wear personal protective equipment (PPE)

Always provide employees with appropriate headgear such as helmets or hard hats, especially in environments with a high risk of falling objects or impact. Ensure that personal protective equipment (PPE) is properly fitted and maintained to provide maximum protection against injury.

Prioritize employee training and awareness

Providing adequate training and education to employees is key to safety:

  • Educate workers about the signs and symptoms of concussions.
  • Provide training on proper lifting techniques, use of equipment, and safety in hazardous areas.
  • Ensure all employees know the steps to take in case of an injury.

Conduct safety drills

Regularly conducting safety drills is essential in fostering a culture of safety within the workplace. These drills not only ensure that employees are aware of emergency procedures but also educate them on how to act swiftly and effectively in critical situations. Be sure to focus on incidents which can occur unexpectedly and require immediate response. The more prepared employees are in these types of situations, the better the outcome.

Manage workloads and fatigue

It’s key to prevent employees from overexerting themselves, as this can lead to fatigue and a higher risk of accidents. Implementing regular breaks and alternating tasks, particularly in physically demanding settings, can significantly lower the chances of injuries.

By implementing these strategies, workplaces can help minimize concussion risks and enhance the safety of all employees. If you have questions about safety in your business or organization, contact DF Safety today to discuss how we can help.
