A power outage can happen at any time, no matter the season. It is important to know what to do when one occurs and be prepared should it last for an extended amount of time. The more educated and equipped you are, the less stressful and overwhelming it will be. So, today, let’s chat about some tips to help ensure you are ready if a power outage should occur in your neighbourhood.
- Create an emergency kit
Having the proper items needed during a power outage is extremely important if there is a power outage. Your kit should be equipped with things you will need, but generally should include the following:
- Telephone numbers
- Flashlight and batteries
- Candles/matches, battery operated candles/lights
- Portable charger for phone
- A battery-powered radio and clock
- If you have a fireplace, keep a stock of firewood
- Non-perishable food
- Bottled water
- Warm clothes and blankets
- First aid kit
- Important medications (check for expiry dates)
- Portable stoves, lamps, and other camping equipment. Store them and their fuels in a shed or garage separate from your house: Never use barbecues, portable generators or propane/kerosene heaters indoors.
Be sure to check your kit at least once a year to ensure items haven’t expired, if you need to restock or add other items.
- Have a plan
It’s important to have a plan in place if there is a power outage in your home. Consider your family, and their needs. What items would you all need to be comfortable, safe and warm? Ensure you speak to all family members about what to do, and what your plan is so everyone understands. Being prepared and knowing what to do during and extended power outage helps ensure everyone is calm, relaxed, and understands they have what they need.
- Sign up for alerts
You can choose to get alerts by text or email, ensuring you know there is a power outage in your area, and your provider is aware and working on the issue. Alerts through Epcor, for example, will update you on when the power went out, how long it will be out, and when the power is back on. You can register for alerts for Epcor here. This way, you stay informed, allowing you the opportunity to better prepare and ensure you have everything you need. You can also check for current outages in Edmonton here.
- Learn to operate your garage door
If there is a loss of power, you don’t want your vehicle to be trapped in your garage! Therefore, be sure to read your electric garage door manual so that you can locate the emergency release handle. It’s essential to know how to open and close your garage door without power.
Extra Tips
Keep these tips in mind:
During a power outage:
- Turn off heat producing appliances and devices to minimize risk of fire when power is back on
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed
- Use backup power for your sump pump if applicable.
- Keep one light on, inside and outside, your home so that workers will know when the power is back on (and you will too!).
After a power outage:
- Turn on essential appliances
- Check fridge and freezer
- Replace or add items to emergency kit (whether they were used or you thought of something else you need next time).
- Walk around your property to ensure no damage (applicable after a storm).
- Reset clocks, timers and alarms.
Power outages can occur suddenly, so it’s key to be prepared to keep everyone safe and comfortable. With some proper planning, you can provide what’s necessary and make the situation less stressful for everyone.
