Commonly Overlooked Household Hazards

DF SafetyPersonal Safety Guide

Your home is meant to be your sanctuary, a place for relaxation, creating memories, and enjoying time with loved ones after a long day. Yet, some hidden hazards might lurk within your space without your knowledge. In today’s blog, we want to highlight some frequently overlooked household dangers to help you make your home as safe as possible, ensuring the well-being of those you value most.

Electrical and fire hazards

  • Overloaded power strips: Plugging too many devices into one outlet can overheat wiring and start fires.
  • Damaged cords: Frayed or pinched wires are easy to ignore but pose serious shock and fire risks. Be sure to check these frequently and replace as needed.
  • Lint buildup in dryers: A common, but often forgotten, cause of house fires. Approximately 15,000 fires are caused in North America each year by lint buildup in dryers.
  • Unattended candles: Leaving a candle unattended is a serious risk. Consider flameless options, which give the same ambience, but without the added concern. Plus, if you forget about them, they can’t cause any damage.

Chemical hazards

  • Expired products: Some cleaners and medications can become less effective, or unsafe, over time. Be sure to check these products regularly and dispose of them appropriately

Slips, trips, and fall hazards

  • Loose rugs or mats: These are especially dangerous for kids and older adults. Consider non-slip rugs, and ensure corners and edges remain flat to avoid tripping.
  • Cluttered walkways: Shoes, cords, and backpacks can quickly become tripping hazards. Keep areas, like your entryways, stairs, and hallways clear to reduce the number of trips and falls.
  • Poor lighting: Darkness makes it harder to spot obstacles, especially on stairs. Ensure your home has proper lighting (and replace bulbs when needed). Don’t forget about the outside of your home as well. A well-lit home not only keeps you and your family safe but also helps keep intruders away.
  • Hot water set too high: This can cause burns or scalding in seconds. Ensure your hot water heater is set to a safe hot water temperature.
  • Space heaters too close to objects: Curtains, furniture, or bedding can quickly catch fire, so ensure these appliances are placed at a safe distance and never left unattended.
  • Blocked vents: This can overheat appliances or reduce air quality. Ensure your vents aren’t covered by items, to keep the airflow in your home consistent.

Child safety hazards

  • Small objects within reach: Always keep choking hazards like coins, batteries, or toy parts out of reach of children.
  • Unsecured furniture: Dressers or televisions can tip over if climbed on, so ensure they are always secured safely to the wall.

Additional hazards:

  • Carbon monoxide exposure: Carbon monoxide is often called the silent killer. This lethal gas can’t be detected by smell, taste, or sight, meaning you could unknowingly inhale harmful fumes until it’s too late. Check out our blog to stay safe!
  • Charging devices overnight on soft surfaces: Since heat gets trapped under pillows or couches, always charge your devices on a hard surface to avoid potential risk.

Making safety in your home a top priority is essential. Regularly inspect common areas and pay attention to the details in each room to ensure everyone stays safe and secure.
