Before You Snuggle In: Electric Blanket Safety

DF SafetyPersonal Safety Guide

As the weather gets cooler, looking for ways to stay warm often includes enjoying the heat from an electric blanket. Cozying up on the couch after a long day, snuggling in with a toasty blanket and enjoying your favourite movie or show is a fall favourite, especially in Alberta. However, while we want you to enjoy your electric blanket, we want to ensure you do so safely. So, in today’s blog, let’s review some electric blanket safety precautions to keep in mind throughout fall and winter.

Check Before Covering Up

Whether your electric blanket is newly out of the box or one you have loved for several seasons, it’s always a good idea to ensure it’s working properly before using it. Be sure to look for:

  • Frayed or exposed wires
  • Damaged plugs
  • Broken controls

If you notice any damage or find that it’s not working as effectively as it should, it’s best to replace the blanket rather than continuing to use it or attempting to fix it. Purchasing a replacement is a safe and smart way to ensure you don’t cause any issues or accidents.

Store Properly

When not in use, it’s best to store your blanket appropriately. Don’t leave it plugged in or turned on when not in use, or if you aren’t home or supervising it. Avoid folding, bunching, tucking or rolling your blanket to ensure it continues to work well and that the heat is evenly distributed when you turn it on.

Keep the Cord Uncovered

As with all the cords in your home, make sure that the one for your blanket isn’t blocked or covered, and that it’s a safe distance from any heat sources. Make sure that the cord isn’t stuck under furniture or positioned in a way that can cause damage, which can lead to sparks or fire.

Don’t Sleep with It

It’s tempting to sleep under your blanket all night, but it’s best not to. While most blankets will shut off after a determined amount of time, if yours doesn’t, it’s best to avoid sleeping with it.  Check the product instructions before leaving yours on overnight.

Keep Away from Water

Electricity and water don’t mix! Therefore, don’t use an electric blanket if it’s wet, and make sure it’s completely dry before plugging it in. Some electric blankets can be machine washed but be sure to follow the instructions before doing so.

Supervise Children

Your kids might want to snuggle under the electric blanket too, but they should always be supervised. Young children may not notice when a blanket gets too hot, so keep an eye on how they use it.

Who Should Avoid Electric Blankets

Some people should avoid using them altogether:

  • Pregnant individuals
  • People with diabetes
  • People who experience poor circulation

If you aren’t sure if you can safely use one, be sure to speak with a medical professional.

Always unplug your blanket, allow it to cool completely, and store it in a safe spot.

By following the instructions, watching for damage, and avoiding overheating, you can use yours safely all season long. So, snuggle in and enjoy those cozy evenings!
